A counter is how you find out what a machine actually earns. Cash in the box tells you the total; the counter tells you how many vends produced it, which is what you need to catch coin theft, verify a price change worked, or decide whether a location is worth keeping. For route operators, the difference between a counted machine and an uncounted one is the difference between managing a business and guessing at it.

Mechanical counting means no batteries, no network, and no dependency on the machine's electronics. It keeps counting whether or not anything else is working.
